GENERAL TATTOO AFTERCARE

Now that you have your brand-new tattoo, it's crucial to ensure proper care! Your artist may provide specific aftercare instructions based on their preferred approach, so it's essential to heed their advice. However, if you forget, return to the fundamental principles of this aftercare. Keep the bandage or dressing on for a minimum of 1 to 4 hours to prevent exposure to airborne bacteria!

It is highly advisable to adhere to these aftercare instructions throughout the entire healing process to promote the recovery of your new tattoo and protect your skin, a cherished asset. The outermost layer of skin typically takes 2-3 weeks to heal, with complete healing potentially extending up to 6 months. For any questions or concerns regarding the healing of your tattoo, feel free to contact our studio directly.

General Aftercare

Begin by washing your hands, then gently remove the bandage or dressing. Cleanse your tattoo using lukewarm water multiple times a day, using a mild, unscented, antibacterial soap to prevent potential infection. Avoid using a washcloth or anything abrasive; your hands are your best tools. If your tattoo feels slippery, delicately remove as much of the substance as possible; this is known as plasma. When plasma dries it can create scabs. Let your tattoo air dry or gently pat it dry with a paper towel. Remember never touch your tattoo unless you have just washed your hands.

Apply a very light layer of the recommended tattoo aftercare product, ointment, or fragrance and dye-free lotion to keep your tattoo moisturized. Use these sparingly! A thin layer accelerates the healing process. After the initial days of using an ointment, we recommend transitioning to a non-scented lotion to support the healing process.

Avoid wearing tight clothing over your tattoo, and if possible, refrain from sleeping directly on it to avoid disturbing the healing process. Avoid immersing your tattoo in large bodies of water such as pools, oceans, lakes, or hot tubs during the first 2-4 weeks. Minimize activities that lead to excessive sweating and sun exposure during this time. Showers are acceptable, but ensure your tattoo doesn't become saturated, as this could harm the healing process.

Resist the urge to pick, peel, or scratch any scabbing or hardened layers, as these are normal, and interfering could harm the tattoo or affect its color.

Remember, tattoos are permanent. Failure to follow proper aftercare instructions can lead to infection. Signs of infection may include increased redness or swelling, pain when touching the tattoo, a throbbing sensation, or a sensation of heat. If there is discharge that turns yellow or green and has an offensive odor, this could indicate infection. In such cases, please contact our studio immediately or seek urgent medical attention. It is crucial to adhere to these guidelines diligently.

Long-term Aftercare

Caring for your tattoo in the long run is as crucial as immediate aftercare. The better you treat your skin, the longer your investment in your tattoo will endure. After your tattoo has healed, it's essential to consistently shield it from the sun's ultraviolet rays. Always use a minimum of 30 SPF sunblock to PROTECT your tattoo. Keep your tattoos well-moisturized, particularly in areas prone to fading, such as hands, feet, knees, and elbows. This ongoing care will contribute to the longevity of your tattoo, reducing the risk of fading over time.
